Most photos keep their size at 200 KB

At 200 KB the 2000 x 1333 test photo kept every pixel and needed only JPEG quality 75. The 12 MP photo, 4000 x 2667 pixels like a phone camera, was scaled to 3511 x 2341 at quality 35. The screenshot was already small enough at quality 95, so it barely changed.

That makes 200 KB a comfortable size for listings, email, job portals and forms that want a full photo.

Test images are synthetic files made by this project: a 2000 x 1333 landscape photo, a 1600 x 900 interface screenshot and a 1200 x 1200 transparent illustration. The 12 MP photo is the same photo scaled up to 4000 x 2667, the size a phone camera saves. Quality is lowered first and the image is only scaled down when quality alone cannot reach the target. A JPEG that is already under the target is left as it is. Timings: one thread of WebAssembly on Node v22.23.4, Intel(R) Xeon(R) Processor @ 2.10GHz, 2 cores, measured 2026-10-31. Other devices will differ.

Resize a phone photo first

A 12 MP photo carries more pixels than any web page or form will show. If you resize it to 2000 pixels on the long side before compressing, the whole 200 KB goes to a picture people can see, and the quality setting can stay higher. The resize tool does this, or set Dimensions in Advanced settings on this page.

Screenshots and graphics

A screenshot saved as JPEG keeps its text sharp at a high quality setting, and most screenshots end well under 200 KB. If the destination accepts PNG or WebP, those keep flat colours and text cleaner still. Choose them under Save as, or use PNG to WebP.

A quick routine

  1. Drop the photo. It is compressed straight away to just under 200 KB.
  2. Check the size and the quality on the result card.
  3. Open Compare and look at the photo at 100%. At 200 KB, damage is rare.
  4. Download the JPEG, or add more photos and download them together as a ZIP.

What stays and what goes

The picture stays the same shape. GPS location, camera details and edit history are removed unless you keep them in the Metadata settings, and a photo that was saved sideways with a rotation tag is turned upright first.

Questions

Will a 200 KB photo look worse?

Usually not at normal viewing size. Quality only drops a little for a typical photo, and the compare view lets you check.

Why did my photo get smaller in pixels?

It was larger than about 2000 pixels on the long side. Fitting it into 200 KB at a decent quality meant scaling it down.

Can I compress several photos at once?

Yes. Drop them together and download a ZIP. Each one counts once toward the free limit of 10 images a day.
