What the viewer shows
Drop an image and the row lists what it contains as small badges, such as GPS location, EXIF, XMP, IPTC, Colour profile and Content Credentials. Open Details on the image and then Show all metadata for the full list, grouped by type: camera and exposure details, dates, software, copyright, the colour profile, text fields and any C2PA record with its claim generator.
The table reads four test files. The photo has no metadata at all. sample-meta.jpg has 29 fields across 7 groups, and sd-prompt.png carries text fields and a Content Credentials record. Parsing takes about a millisecond, since the pixels are not decoded.
| File | Size | Fields read | Groups | GPS | Content Credentials | Read time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| photo.jpg | 694 KB | 0 | None | No | No | 1 ms |
| sample-meta.jpg | 104 KB | 29 | EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, ICC, Content Credentials, JPEG | Yes | Yes, Brainoxa Fixture Maker/1.0 | under 1 ms |
| sample-meta.webp | 404 KB | 18 | EXIF, GPS, ICC | Yes | No | under 1 ms |
| sd-prompt.png | 302 KB | 5 | Content Credentials, PNG text | No | Yes, Brainoxa Fixture Maker/1.0 | under 1 ms |
Reading happens in the page and takes about a millisecond or less, because only the metadata segments are parsed and the pixels are not decoded. The test files carry sample data written by this project, including a made-up location. Read times are the average of 20 runs. Timings: one thread of WebAssembly on Node v22.23.4, Intel(R) Xeon(R) Processor @ 2.10GHz, 2 cores, measured 2026-10-31. Other devices will differ.
GPS shown as numbers
When a photo has a position, the viewer shows the coordinates as numbers and warns you. It does not load a map, because that would mean sending the position to a map service. Paste the numbers into a map app yourself if you want to see the place.
Reading is free of the daily count
Looking at metadata does not use one of your 10 daily images, because nothing is processed. Only running a conversion or cleaning counts. If you decide to remove the data, press the Clean button in the bar at the bottom, or use the metadata removal page.
Reading what you find
- Camera make, model and lens come from the device that took the photo.
- Software and edit history show which program saved the file last.
- A Content Credentials entry names the tool that made the claim, called the claim generator.
- A missing field does not prove anything. Many services remove metadata when you upload.
A check before you share a photo
- Drop the photo into the viewer and look at the badges on its row.
- If GPS location appears, open the details and read the coordinates.
- Decide whether that place should be public. A photo taken at home points to your address.
- Remove the data on the metadata page, or leave metadata removal on in whichever tool you use to save the image.
Why a date or a camera may look wrong
The date comes from the device clock at the moment of the shot, which can be wrong or reset after a battery change. Software fields show the last program that saved the file, so an edited photo names that app and not the camera. Many services remove metadata on upload, so a file saved from social media often shows very little.
Questions
Does the viewer change my file?
No. It only reads it.
Which formats does it read?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC carry the most. GIF, BMP and SVG are accepted but hold little.
Why is there no map?
A map would send the coordinates to another server. The viewer keeps everything on your device.
Can I see data a camera app hides?
Only what is stored in the file. Fields the app never wrote cannot be shown.
